The horror genre history is vast and convoluted. Even dating back all the way to Ancient Greece and Rome. Although, these are horror-based stories and not commonly filmed. The first horror film that is known to be created is produced by Georges Méliès. This moving picture is titled Le Manoir du Diable. This translates to "The Haunted Castle" or "The House of The Devil" in English. However, this film is only 3 minutes long since this was created back in 1896. And in today's day and age, this is extremely short.
Alfred Hitchcock heavily contributed to the current horror genre. With classics like "The Birds'' and "To Catch a Thief". These classic films established the horror brand and contributed to what we see today.
Furthermore, slasher films joint alongside the horror genre. The slasher genre made its start with John Carpenter's "Halloween" from the late 1970s. However, the slasher genre did exist before this, John's film heavily contributed to its popularity. Due to its success, many even attempted to make cheap knockoffs of Carpenter's films. This caused slasher films to reach their peak in the years 1978 through 1984. In my film, I plan to use sorrow more than actual horror. Unlike most horror films. However, the horror will lie in the uneasy dreading feeling instead of repeated jumpscares. I intend to use the suspense method that Alfred Hitchcock commonly used and is well known for.
